Our sports day will take place on Monday 18th June.  The children will be taking part in a variety of fun activities which start at 1.15 pm with the final races at approximately 2.15 pm. You are very welcome to come along and support your child.

On the day please can the children bring trainers, a sunhat, water bottle and have sun cream applied at home. This year the class colours are as follows;

Mrs Hynes – blue

Mrs Boscher – yellow

Miss Rooney – red

Mrs Bramley– green

Dear Parents/Carers

Literacy

Over the rest of this half term we will be learning about Captain Cook and building this into our Literacy lessons. The children will have the opportunity to learn about places that Captain Cook explored and some of the things that he discovered. This is a very exciting topic for the children to learn about and we look forward to teaching it to them.

Numeracy

In numeracy this week we will be looking at finding the difference but we will include finding change. You may like to play some shopping games at home where your child can use some real money to find change. The children are used to making amounts of money when they pay for their activities in the Discovery Zone.

Sport your Trainers/Race for Life – Friday 15th June

Next Friday we have our Sport Your Trainers day where the children can wear sports clothes mufti and trainers for a recommended donation (50p). This fundraising will go towards the Guernsey Sports Commission. After school we will be having our very own Race for life where the children can take part in a run around the school grounds. There will be a form which will be handed out for you to fill in to indicate whether or not your child would like to take part. We anticipate this being quite a popular event so do politely ask that if your child wants to take part they are accompanied by a parent or carer for the run.

Spellings

This week most of the children will have come home with a list of High Frequency Words which we will be working on being able to spell. Each week we will work on these words and encourage the children to pay more attention to spelling them correctly in their writing. We won’t be testing the children formally on these words.

Upcoming Events

Monday 18th June:- Sports Day – more information will follow shortly regarding what colour to wear.

Week beginning 25th June:- Sponsored Swim –  Children will be bringing home a sponsorship form this week which contains more information. All of the children’s sponsored swim sessions will happen on their usual swimming day.

Tuesday 10th July:- Year 1 Gardening Day – parents/carers/grandparents will be invited to come into school to help with our garden. More information will follow shortly.

In literacy next week we will be continuing to write chick diaries. This will be the last week that the chicks will be in school because they will be getting bigger and will need to be moved to a bigger run. The children have really enjoyed giving them cuddles!

In maths we will be continuing our work on addition as well as moving on to some work on finding the difference between two numbers.

Miss Horsepool’s Class will be going on their trip to the walled garden on Monday 21st May.

EPIC Week

Next week is EPIC week! Children in Reception and Year 1 will be working in mixed groups doing different activities with different teachers each day.  On Friday afternoon we shall be holding a whole school celebration on the field with dancing and lollies.

Teachers have allocated children a different activity each day which will give them the opportunity to try lots of new things including cooking, Beebots, art, science and outside games.

Children do not need to wear uniform but please could they all wear trainers every day in case they are doing games activities.

Please note that morning activities will still remain the same so children will still need swimming and PE kits as normal.

We hope that they come home and tell you how epic each day has been!

Walk to School Week

Next week is Walk to School week. Children will have brought home a leaflet with more information. We ask that if you don’t already walk to school that you make an effort next week to either walk all the way to school or drive part of the way and walk a little bit if you live too far to walk. Each day, children who walk will to school will be able to put a sticker on the class wall chart.

Sun Hats

Please can we remind you again that all children should have a sunhat in school everyday. We have still found that we are running out of spare hats because so many children are forgetting to bring them in. Please could we also remind you to put suncream on children in morning before they come to school because we are unable to apply it for them during the day.

Half Term

A reminder that school will be shut for half term from Monday 28th until Friday 1st June. We look forward to seeing the children again on Monday 4th June.

We hope you have a lovely half term

Chicks Hatching

The teachers have had a very exciting time today watching the first chicks hatch. Here is a video of them. It looks like there are some more on their way so we hope that some of them will wait until Thursday so the children can watch them hatch.

Dear parents/carers

Maths

We shall be returning to work on place value and reading, writing and ordering numbers.

In the next couple of weeks we shall move from the current Rainbow Maths Targets (doubling and halving) to new targets on addition and subtraction. You will receive a letter to let you know your child’s new targets.

Literacy

We will be beginning some work on reading and writing instructions using a text called ‘How to Grow a Sunflower.’

Planting

Next week we shall be opening a ‘potting shed’ in the Discovery Zone. Children will be able to choose to plant cress, a bean or sunflower seed. They will need to work out how much it will cost them to buy their equipment e.g. pot, seed, soil before following the planting instructions. They will be able to bring home their seeds to watch them grow at home.

Cooking

We have now opened a ‘self service’ cooking area in the Discovery Zone. We currently have a recipe which children can follow to independently bake one muffin. They are following the instructions and using spoonful measurements (2 tablespoons of flour, 1 teaspoon of sugar, 1 teaspoon of raisins, 1 teaspoon of butter and 30ml of milk) We are then baking the muffins and sending them home to eat.

Victorian Walled Garden

We have arranged a trip to the Victorian Walled Garden at Saumarez Park to find out about the plants growing in the garden and do some practical planting.

Mrs Bramley’s class – Friday 4th May

Mrs Boscher’s class – Thursday 10th May

Miss Horsepool’s class – Monday 21st May.

Each class will leave school on the buses at 9.15am and return by 11am. We will require at least 5 additional adults to accompany each class. Please do let your class teacher know if you (or grandparents) can help.

Visiting Author

Our Guernsey Patron of Reading Ann Bryant will be visiting us for a workshop on Tuesday afternoon. We hope that the children will be inspired by her passion and enthusiasm for reading!

Star of the Week

All the children have now had a turn at being Star of the Week in their class. Thankyou for all the wonderful photographs, show and tell items and stories which have been brought in. It has been lovely for the children to share their special interests and belongings with their class.

This term we shall be choosing 2 children per class per week. The children are invited to bring in some information about either a special place (in Guernsey or the world) or a special person or event in history. We shall then add their information to our class maps and timeline. They could bring in photographs, an information book, objects drawings or writing to help them talk to their class about what they have chosen.

When your child is chosen they shall bring home a letter with more information.

Sunny Weather

Thankyou if you have already sent a sun hat into school for your child. Please can we asked that these are named to reduce lost property. Your child is welcome to either leave a hat in their tray or bring it to and from school every day. Could we also remind you that suncream should be applied before school if possible as we are not able to apply this to children during the day.

Library

A quick reminder that our library days have changed this term and are as follows:

Mrs Boscher – Tuesday

Miss Horsepool – Wednesday

Mrs Bramley – Thursday

Many thanks

Weekly Note w/c 23.4.18

This week the children have been enjoying a variety of traditional tales. We will be continuing this work on storytelling next week by encouraging children to make up their own stories, basing them on traditional tales if they wish.

In maths, we will be carrying on with our work on counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. Click here for some counting activities which you might like to do with your child at home.

Please remember the new library days:

Tuesday – Mrs Boscher

Wednesday – Miss Horsepool

Thursday – Mrs Bramley

All children need an outdoor PE kit on a Wednesday please – there were quite a few who had forgotten this week.

As the weather is now starting to warm up (fingers crossed it continues!), please ensure that children have suncream applied before school and that they bring a named sunhat in to wear when the weather is hot and sunny.

Thank you

Weekly Note – w/c – 16.4.18

Welcome back! We hope you all had an enjoyable holiday.

We are excited to be beginning the final term in Year 1 as we have lots of exciting things coming up.

As this is the last term in Year 1, in preparation for the children moving to Year 2, we are encouraging more independence. Please could you help with this by saying goodbye to your child when they line up outside so that they can come in organise their things by themselves. We will be around to give reminders if they forget anything. We have noticed more children coming in with their parents through the Reception doors. Please could we remind you that Year 1 children should be coming in through the Year 1 doors (where Mrs Bramley’s and Mrs Boscher’s classes are collected from at the end of the day).

Next week we will be doing some story telling in the Discovery Zone and linking it to our literacy teaching. If you have any traditional tales at home which your child would like to bring in and share with the class we would love to see them.

In numeracy we will be counting in 2s, 5s and 10s as well as doing some work on halving. This links in with the Rainbow Maths targets which we will be continuing with from last term for the next couple of weeks.
