Parent Appointments

Parents appointments will be the week of Monday 13th February. Please keep an eye out for an e-mail from the office letting you know when you can book.

Weekly Updates w/c – 16.1.17

We have launched our new topic for this half term ‘The Zoo’. There are lots of animal related resources for the children to explore in the Discovery Zone and children will have a Zoo topic passport with some new challenges to complete.

In Literacy we are beginning a Talk for Writing unit on Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The children will be learning actions to help them re-tell the story. Next week we will be doing sentence work based on the story as well as creating a story map.

In Numeracy next week we will be continuing our work on place value and ordering numbers as well as beginning to add 10 and 11 to numbers.

Rainbow Maths Targets

Your child should have bought home their new rainbow maths targets. This term they are focused on doubling and halving. We test the children every few weeks to see if they can achieve their target quickly and they will bring their sheets home so that you can see how they are getting on. Please click here for some online activities to help your child practice their target.

High Frequency Words

Thank you for all your support helping your child to learn to read and spell the High Frequency words – it really does make a difference to both their reading and writing!

This term we will continue to send the High Frequency Word boards home with your child. Children will be given a new board when they are confident reading their current board at speed. Please keep going through the previous boards at home with you child as our assessments at the end of last term have shown that some children are not retaining some of the words which they have learnt previously. It only needs to take a couple of minutes a day and can make a big difference for your child.

The children who are confident reading all the Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 words will no longer be bringing home boards but will have information sent regarding spellings.

Thank you for your support

Weekly Note w/c 28.11.16

Dear parents/carers

Maths

Next week we shall be going back to some work on addition strategies.

Please keep working on your child’s Rainbow Maths Targets at home. The check up sheets they have been bringing home each week  show you how they’ve been getting on. There are now just a few weeks left of this term to work on number bonds because in January we shall move to a new focus of doubling and halving.

Christmas Concert

Rehearsals are now under way for our concert and the children are working very hard to learn their lines, songs and dances.

Thankyou to all of you who have now sent in costumes in a named bag. If you have any difficulties providing any of the items then please let us know as soon as possible so that we can put out a request to the year group or source items ourselves.

The concert is at 2pm on Wednesday 7th December.

Each child has been allocated 2 tickets which you should have received. We kindly ask that if you do not need both of the tickets, please could any spares be returned to school. We have limited numbers due to the space in the hall. If you require extra tickets, any spares will be available from the school office.

Trip to Candie Museum

Each class will be visiting Candie Museum to look at old toys and explore the Discovery Room. If you are able to come along to help with the trip then please let your child’s class teacher know as we require 4 additional helpers per class. Buses will leave school at 9.15am and we shall return for 11am.

Thursday 8th December – Mrs Bramley’s Class

Friday 9th December – Miss Horsepool’s Class

Monday 12th December – Mrs Boscher’s Class

PTA Christmas Fayre

If you have any donations of toys and games, books or bric a brac then these can now be brought into school. Cakes can be brought into school on the day of the fayre.

Children can be collected early from classes from 2.30pm onwards on Friday 1st December to be taken to the Christmas Fayre. Alternatively you can collect as normal at 2.55pm and then visit!

Tickets for the hamper raffle are available from outside the office before and after school until Thursday 1st December. The raffle will then be drawn in assembly on Friday 2nd December.

Many thanks

The children enjoyed their visits to the library this week. They were taken on a tour of the library which included going to ‘staff only’ areas. They also enjoyed listening to stories about monsters and making their own monster.

In literacy next week we will be continuing our work on monster stories.

In maths we will be continuing our work on addition by thinking about doubling numbers. Click here for some links to activities for doubling and Rainbow Maths number bond practise.

We will also be spending time next week learning the songs, words and dances for the Christmas Concert.

Weekly Note 17.10.16

This is the final week before half term and we are really pleased with how well the children have settled into Year 1. We hope you enjoyed having the opportunity to come and see what they get up to in the Discovery Zone and Garden – the children really enjoyed being able to show you their favourite activities.

Literacy

In literacy this week we will be innovating the story of ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ by asking the children to think of different settings which they could go through on a bear hunt. Children will be using an app called ‘Book Creator’ to create a page for our new class version of the story.

We have been using the story map pictured below in class to help us re-tell the story without using the book. See if your child can tell you the story with the actions!image

Maths

In our maths lessons this week we will be working on money. We will begin by getting children to recognise the different coins before using them to make small amounts.  Click below for some money activities which you might like to use to help your child at home.

Money Activities

We will also be doing some work on 3D shapes next week. We would like to make junk models using different shaped boxes or containers. If you have any suitable recycling or empty boxes that you can bring in we would be really grateful.

Flu Immunisations

The flu immunisations will take place on Tuesday 18th for those children who are having them.

We are looking forward to seeing you for the parents evening meetings next week and hope you have a enjoyable half term from 24th – 28th October.

Thank you for your support,

The Year 1 team

Weekly Note w.b. 10.10.16

Dear parents/carers

Maths

Next week we shall be naming and describing 2D shapes. In the Discovery Zone and garden children will be set some shape related challenges including making pictures using cut out shapes, sorting shapes and taking photographs of objects that are different shapes.

We shall also be working on building addition stories using practical objects and cubes.

Literacy

Next week we shall be continuing our work on Bears and the story ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.’ Children will be sequencing the story and completing sentence work based on the text.

One activity which we have introduced the children to is jumbled sentences. This is something which you could do at home using sentences from your child’s reading book or a sentence which they have made up. Write the sentence on a strip of paper and then cut up the words. Muddle them up and ask your child to reassemble them so that the sentence makes sense. (We have been prompting them to remember that sentences begin with a capital letter and end with a full stop.)

High Frequency Words

Your child should have brought home a letter about high frequency words together with a word card. If you have any comments or questions please write them in the purple reading record or speak to your child’s class teacher.

Reading Record Books

The children have a purple reading record book which they bring home each day. This is mainly for you to keep track of your child’s reading and we check these regularly. If you feel that your child is finding their reading book too challenging or indeed feel that they are reading them too easily please let us know. We read a different set of books with the children in school, usually in a group which we call guided reading and therefore we don’t comment on these in the purple reading record books.

School Nurse

Our new school nurse Vicki Allen is now available in the Studio every other Thursday morning for drop in visits. Her next visit will be Thursday 13th October. Your child’s class teacher can also make referrals to her if you would like her support you with any specific issues.

Parent visits

Just a reminder about the invitation for you to come in and visit your child in the Discovery Zone and Garden from 2pm on the following afternoons:

Miss Horsepool’s Class – Monday 10th October
Mrs Boscher’s Class – Tuesday 11th October
Mrs Bramley’s Class – Thursday 13th October

Parents appointments

If you have not yet made an appointment to see us during the week of the 17th October and wish to do so, then please visit http://www.parents-booking.co.uk/stmartinsprimary or speak to your child’s class teacher

Theatre Visit

On Thursday 13th October the children will enjoy a visit from the Rhubarb Theatre Company. These are always very enjoyable performances and so we hope that the children talk to you at home about what the show was about.

School Photographs

Individual school photographs will be taken during the school day on Friday 14th October.

Fitzgeralds are holding family photo sessions (outdoors if the weather permits) on Saturday 15th October between 9-11am

Many thanks
