Local Area Walk

As part of our All About Me topic we are learning about Guernsey and our local area. We are going to go on a walk from school to explore the local area and think about the different things which we see eg. houses, shop, church, community centre etc.

Each class will be going on a different day and we need to ensure that we have enough parents to help. If you are able to help accompany your child’s class, please could you let you child’s teacher know before half term.

Mrs Bramley’s Class – Tuesday 31st October 9-10.30am

Miss Horsepool’s Class – Thursday 2nd November – 9-10.30am

Mrs Boscher’s Class – Friday 3rd November – 9-10.30am

Thank you

Weekly Note w/c 16.10.17

In our literacy lessons next week we will begin to do some learning about bears in preparation for doing a unit on We’re Going on a Bear Hunt after half term.

In our numeracy lessons next week we will be continuing our work on addition and using bar models to help us build addition stories.

Rainbow targets will be given to each child by the end of next week. The aim of the Rainbow Targets is to help children improve their mental maths ability so they need to have quick recall of their target. We will test the children on their targets every couple of weeks by asking them to complete 10 questions in 1 minute. Once children have achieved their target twice they will be given a new target.

Coats and Wellies

Please could you ensure that your child brings a coat to school everyday as the weather is now getting colder and wetter. There are also a number of children who still do not have wellies in school. Please could your child bring some in if they don’t have them to wear during our outside learning sessions.

School Photographs

Individual school photos will be taken on Thursday 19th October for Mrs Boscher’s class and Friday 20th October for Mrs Bramley and Miss Horsepool’s. Family photo sessions can be booked at the school office.

Half Term

Please don’t forget that the school is closed the week after next for half term (23rd-27th October). School closes at the normal time on Friday and begins again on Monday 30th October.

Parents Appointments

We look forward to seeing you for parents appointments next week. If you haven’t already done so, please sign up for an appointment. If you need to link to sign up, please contact the school office.

Thank you for your support,

Explorer Dome

On Friday afternoon the children really enjoyed getting to experience the Explorer Dome. They had to crawl into the dome through the tunnel. Once inside they were shown images projected onto the sides of the dome whilst they were taught about our digestive system. They were taught about the different types of teeth – canines, molars and incisors and got to hold a cow’s molar, a lion’s canine and and shark’s incisor. After that they learnt how food travels down the oesophagus into our stomachs. The fun part of the session was when some of the children got to recreate what happens in the stomach by adding some food to a pretend stomach. They then had to mash it all up, just as our stomach would mash up the food we eat. They then learnt that from there, all the good nutrients from our food travel around the rest of our body to give us energy and help us move whilst the waste food that our body doesn’t need travels through the intestine (we actually got to unravel a pretend one to see how long it is) and eventually comes out as poo!

This experience has launched the new aspect of our ‘All About Me’ topic in the Discovery Zone – Our Body. During Continuous Provision sessions children are able to recreate the ‘What happens in our stomach’ experiment in our Experiment Zone. We also have a skeleton as well as some other bones and body parts for the children to use and explore along with lots of non-fiction topic books.

Dear parents/carers

Maths

Next week we shall be working on addition and also naming and describing 2D shapes.

If you would like to find a few minutes to name basic 2D shapes and talk about corners and sides then this would be helpful preparation for this work.

Harvest

On Tuesday we shall be watching Year 3’s Harvest assembly in the school hall.

As part of our Harvest celebrations, pupils may like to bring a small box filled with non-perishable or packaged foods that an elderly or infirm person would enjoy. All children are asked to bring their boxes in on the 10th October to the main hall. The GVS Meals on Wheels Service will distribute the Harvest boxes within our local community. Please check all food is in date – the GVS have to make sure the food is fit for consumption!

School Council

In the coming week, each class from year 1 upwards will be holding elections to vote for a class school council representative. In Year 1 we will be asking children who are interested to tell the rest of the class why they think they should vote for them to be on the school council. Children will then vote to select their class representative.

The school council meets at lunchtimes on a regular basis and it is a chance for children to raise issues from their class as well as discussing a whole school agenda which they will then bring back to share with the class. In previous years the school council have organised fund raising events, helped to sort out playground equipment and think of ways in which the children would like to improve the school.

Digital Leaders

We are introducing digital leaders across the school. One digital leader will be chosen per class and they will have various responsibilities including being a technical expert within their class and helping their peers to use digital technology. They will also be responsible for ensuring that the ipads are charged and looked after carefully. The digital leaders will be required to attend regular lunchtime meetings with all the other digital leaders where they will learn their responsibilities and be taught how to use apps more confidently as well as learning to use new apps which they can then show their class.

Interested children will be asked to apply for the role by filling in an application form. This process will start to give them awareness of the real world of work and how you have to apply and interview for a job.

The children have had an assembly to introduce them to what being a digital leader will involve and have brought home an application form if they are interested. Please talk about the role with your child and help them to fill in the application form if they would like to apply. It needs to be returned to your child’s teacher by Friday 13th October.

If you have any questions, please contact Mrs Bramley.

Rhubarb Theatre Company

On Thursday we shall have a visit from the Rhubarb Theatre Company who will perform a show about travelling back in time.

Jelly Bean Challenge

Hopefully you will have seen the blog post earlier this week about our new Key Stage One Jelly Bean Challenge! The resources have arrived earlier than expected, and so children are welcome to bring in 50p to get a kit from this Monday 9th October.

Thank you for your continued support
