Weekly note – w/c 8.5.17

The classes that have already been to the Victorian Walled Garden really enjoyed themselves and have planted lots of tomato and bean plants which we will be planting in our school garden. Mrs Bramley’s Class will be going on Thursday 11th May. They are still a couple of parents short for the trip so if you are able to help, please could you let Mrs Bramley know.

In literacy we will be continuing our work on non-fiction texts, reading the book ‘How to grow a sunflower’. We will be looking at the features of non-fiction books and the children will be writing instructions on how to grow a plant. When you are reading with your child at home, ask them if they can spot (and use if they can) some of the features of non-fiction texts that we have been thinking about eg. contents page, headings, labels, captions, glossary, index.

In maths this week we will be thinking about ordering numbers and place value, thinking about the hundreds, tens and units in a number.

We will be sending home new Rainbow Targets for the children. These will be based on Addition and Subtraction. Please click here for a link to some online addition and subtraction activities which you might like to do with your child to help them practise their target. Although most children will be able to do simple addition and subtraction sums, the idea of the target work is to help them solve them quickly and mentally without having to count on using their fingers or a numberline each time.

The PTA Bake Off takes place on Monday – we look forward to seeing all of your creations! The cake sale starts at 2.30pm in the hall for parents. If children wish to go to the sale they needed to be collected from school first at the usual time then you can take them to the cake sale.

Please remember that there will be no school on Tuesday due to Liberation Day. We hope you have an enjoyable day!

Thank you for your support,

The Year 1 team
